What is Argentine Tango?

bandoneón
Argentine tango is a cultural phenomenon born in the Rio de la Plata area, at the end of the 19th century. The Rio de la Plata, as our St-Lawrence in Quebec, was an important development agent for Argentina (Buenos Aires) and Uruguay (Montevideo) toward the rest of the world. Massive immigration and cultural mixity were the basis of the musical, poetical and danced expression of tango.

The tango appeared first in Buenos Aires populars neighborhoods. Even if tango is seen often today in theatres by professional dancers, the soul of tango belongs to people of all ages and all conditions.

Tango can be tragic, melancolic, dramatic but also joyfull and playfull. As an improvisation and interpretation, argentine tango grows from a shared experience by two humain being. It goes on all the spectrum of human experience, nurtured by the emotion evocated by dancers and musicians.

Technically, the improvisation in tango requires a constant attention by the two partners for each other, as for Emilie & Louisthe music. There is no choregraphy or predetermined steps. The presence of pauses, deceleration and acceleration, symetricals movements (or disymetrical) are opening wider the possibilities of interpretation. Tango is danced not only on the rythmical beat but also on any musical level of the orchestra. Interpretation will be fluid, dynamic or subtil following the individuals that dance together and the music.

In Argentine Tango, the communication in the couple is transmitted from heart to heart, by the contact between the two chests. This contact gives a larger freedom to the lower part of the body and preserves the intimity to the upper part.

A "milonga" is the name given to a tango dance event. There is three musical styles to dance: the tango, the tango-waltz (Vals cruzada) and the milonga. The milonga is therefore also the name of a dance that gived birth to tango, with Habanera and Candombé.
